Poiché la maggior parte delle persone utilizza principalmente la mano destra, gli attaccanti salendo le scale in senso orario si trovavano il pilone centrale dalla parte del braccio che brandiva la spada; quindi in condizioni di disagio. Viceversa i difensori, che attendevano in cima alle scale, avevano un angolo di visuale e di manovra più ampio. Non a caso, negli attacchi gli spadaccini mancini erano molto apprezzati e ricercati.
